About This Website

Welcome to the page that explains the story behind this site.

Why did we build this?

A creative challenge

Our main website at briocleaning.net serves its purpose well. This alternative version started as a personal creative challenge — a way to push my boundaries and try something different.

Why different?

In a world where modern websites often look alike, I wanted to explore another direction. This version pays homage to the web design of the early 2000s: an era of bold choices, visible borders, fixed-width layouts, and distinctive style. It's not just about being different; it's about embracing creativity and finding joy in experimentation.

Born from curiosity

This project started during a slow moment — but isn't that when some of the most interesting ideas come to life? Instead of settling for the usual, I decided to build something unexpected. It's a reminder that even routine tasks can become opportunities for creativity.

Technical exploration

This project let me:

  • Experiment with retro web design principles
  • Practice hand-writing HTML and CSS without a framework
  • Push the boundaries of conventional design
  • Build something genuinely personal

Design notes

The look draws on classic early-2000s elements:

  • Solid, contrasting colors and a two-column layout
  • Fixed-width, centered page on a tiled background
  • Beveled (outset/inset) buttons and visible borders
  • A scrolling news strip and a visitor counter
  • Simple hover effects and sans-serif type

Everything here is static: pure HTML, CSS, and a few lines of vanilla JavaScript, hosted on Neocities.
